KERRVILLE - In the evening of Feb. 7, 2009, Harry William Crate passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94.
The son of Harry Edward "Pappy" Crate and Willa "Sweet" Crate, he was born in Houston, Texas, Dec. 19, 1914. The family moved to the Hill Country in 1925, establishing Rio Vista Lodge on the Guadalupe between Ingram and Hunt, where he spent many happy hours hiking, swimming, and hunting arrow heads.
After graduation from Tivy High School, "Harry Bill" attended Schreiner Institute and, finally, Rice University in Houston, earning a master's degree in architecture. He then returned to Schreiner Institute as a teacher - eventually encompassing the entire range of engineering subjects - where he also served as an instructor during World War II in the training of military pilots (Morse code, navigation, etc.). After 40 years teaching at Schreiner, he retired as Professor Emeritus.
On June 5, 1937, during his time at Rice, he married Melba Lee Williams, who had co-edited student newspapers with him at Tivy and Schreiner. Together, they enjoyed hiking, camping, music and many activities with their family and the Schreiner community. His avid interest in archeology culminated in sponsorship of an archeology club at Schreiner, excavating several local "Indian mounds" and the tusks and teeth of pre-historic mammoths and mastodons from Kerr County gravel pits.
He is predeceased by his parents and his wife.
He is survived by a son, Searle; a daughter, Jenny Lou; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and countless friends and ex-students.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Kerrville Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Nichols Cemetery.
A memorial celebration of his life will be at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Schreiner University.
Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Kerrville Funeral Home.
