Kenneth L. Heermann, age 82, died Nov. 14, 2014, at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree.

Kenneth was born Feb. 28, 1932, on his family’s farm in Holyoke to Rudolph and Mata Heermann. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Holyoke High School in 1950 and then attended college at Colorado State University. While at CSU, he met Alois Thies, and they were later married in Hay Springs, Neb., on April 13, 1952. To this union, three children were born: Malinda, Eldon and Brenda.

Shortly after marriage, he volunteered for the United States Army to serve in the Korean War. During basic, he was promoted to lance corporal and was later deployed to Fairbanks, Alaska, to serve as part of a first response effort in the advent of a USSR invasion.

Following his discharge from the Army in 1954, Kenneth moved back to Holyoke to take over the family wheat farm. After passing on the farm to his son Eldon, and his full retirement in 1997, Kenneth enjoyed traveling and taking cross-country RV trips with his wife Alois. At age 65 he became an avid aviator, and he enjoyed friends and camaraderie while playing cards at the local card club and golfing.

Following Alois’s death, he met a new companion, Naomi Jenkins, whom he married on Sept. 1, 2012, and shared several happy years with. Kenneth was able to share with Naomi many of his favorite places.

Kenneth was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he held many offices. He was also active in the Holyoke Lions Club and the Holyoke Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi; his daughter and son-in-law, Malinda and Mark Chapman of Foxfield; son and daughter-in-law, Eldon and Christine Heermann of Holyoke; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda Heermann and Gary Cross of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; grandchildren, Ryan and Kassi Chapman, Alysia and Colin Burns, Justin Heermann and Sarah Heermann; great-grandchildren, Lyla and Everly Chapman; and stepdaughters, Deanna Wegman and Tonia Carlson.

Kenneth was preceded in death by Alois Heermann; a son who died in childbirth; his parents, Rudolph and Mata Heermann; and an older brother, Arnold.

There was no visitation.

The funeral service was held Nov. 21 at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating. Interment followed at the Holyoke Cemetery.

Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
