Hiram was the son of Charles A. and Lavina Victoria Riggs Beard. His father was born in Pleasant Bend, Ohio and hi mother possibly in Michigan. He married Mamie Reiser on 28 August 1895 in Lucas County, and they had John Edwin, William George, Charles Edmund, Merlyn Donald, and Florence E. Hiram was an electrician on the steamer State Of New York, worked in a bakery, and then was a marine engineer for the Ford Motor Car Company. At age 7, Hiram was in Lucas County and his mother, Victoria Beard, was in the same boarding house and working as a dressmaker. His parents had divorced.

In 1900, HIram was an electrician aboard the steamer State of New York which was tied up at Summit Street in Toledo. In October of 1916, Hiram applied for a passport and was traveling for commercial business as a superintendent for the Lake Forest University. He had invented a device for the salvaging of submarines and the university was interested in ascertaining its success. HIram died from cardiac problems at the age of 55 years 10 months and 10 days.
