He enlisted on 11 July 1861 in Com. F, 14th Georgia Infantry along with his younger brother Henry, who died almost 6 months earlier, and also lies here. He was also a son of Wiley C. Mayo (CS soldier who died at Fredericksburg) and his first wife Nancy B. Smith. Their half-brothers Asa D. Mayo and John Wiley Mayo also served in the same company, being much younger, almost 16 and 18, at enlistment did not enter the War until Aug. 1864, the month after their father was killed. At the time of the conflict began they lived in Wrightsville, Johnson County, Georgia. William and Henry are the only brothers to have both died in Huntersville and buried here.
