Alfred and Sarah had ten Children. They had five boys and five girls. The children are John Watts, Sarah Ann, Matilda, Alfred, Emma, Elizabeth, Rachael, Walter, Robert, and Arthur.
The 1871 lists Alfred Phillip's occupation as a Stockman. The 1881 census lists Alfred Phillip as a farm bailiff on the Smith's farm and living at 18 Hockley Road. Alfred raised produce which he would not sell on Sundays. He was a Protestant.
Alfred Phillip's wife, Sarah, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 24 October 1855. Alfred did not join the church.
Four of Alfred and Sarah's children, Sarah Ann, Mary Matilda, Emma, and Alfred, emigrated to America during the agricultural depression of the 1870's. The parents and children may have seen the promise of a new life in the USA as an escape from the hunger that they would have been suffering in Hawkwell, when there was little work for Alfred. In the 1870's people continued to leave the area because of bad farming conditions, the fall in the price of wheat, the high tithe rate and the lack of clean drinking water.
Alfred Phillip died on 24 Sep 1905 in Hockley, Essex, England. He is buried in the Ashingdon Churchyard.
