Born September 15, 1896 in Monroe, Utah to William Rowell and Sarah Ann Matilda Newland Hicks. Married Phoebe May Winn on January 31, 1916 in Richfield, Utah. She died on March 2, 1975. In his early days he was active as a horse and wagon freighter, spending many days on the road from Sevier County, south. He also hauled logs off Monroe Mountain to the sawmill in Monroe. He owned and operated a farm in Brooklyn, 1917 until his retirement in 1972. Active in area riding clubs and served as President of the Monroe Riding Club in 1948. President of the Utah State Western Riding Club in 1952. President of the Rocky Mountain States Riding Association from 1954-55. He organized the Elsinore Riding Club and was a charter member in 1952. Assisted in the organization of the Sevier County Sheriff's Mounted Posse. He served as President of the Brooklyn Canal Co., and was President of the Richfield Senior Citizens.


Survived by son and three daughters, Mrs. Wanda Nielsen, Mrs. Derral (Coye) Poulson, Jack Homer Hicks and Mrs. Ned (Barbara) Sorenson, all Richfield; 15 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, 13 brothers and sisters, one son, K. L. Hicks, and two sons-in-law, Niel Nielsen, Glen Hunt.
