FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN MINNESOTA
Mrs. Herman Laabs, 62, Passes Away at Canby, Minn., March 22

Residents of the Sumner vicinity will be sorry lo learn of the death of Mrs. Herman Laabs, a former resident of this community, who passed away at her home in Canby, Minn., on March 22.
Marie Sophia Christina Jarchow was born on Jan. 26, 1873, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Jarchow. She was baptized in infancy at her home in Green Garden county in Illinois and as a small child came to Iowa with her parents. Here her father bought the farm on the county line now owned by H. C. Buhr.
She was confirmed April 1, 1888, by Rev. H . Bredow. In 1892 she was married to Herman Laabs in Fredericksburg township, Rev. Bredow officiating. After their marriage they moved to a farm in the vicinity of the Stapleton church where they lived 11 years. Their oldest child, Ella Marie, died there at the age of one year and eight months.
In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Laabs moved to Freeland township, Lac qui Parle county, Minn., and they made their home there ever since.
Mrs. Laabs had been in poor health for many years, but her illness did not become critical until Feb. 28 of this year. After the first attack had subsided enough for her to be moved, she was taken to the University hospital in Minneapolis for special treatment. But medical skill was of no avail and she died March 22 at 4:60 a. m. at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 26 days. No member of her family was with her when she departed.
She is survived by her husband and nine children, William at home; Mrs. Tim Duddin of Canby, Minn.; Leo of Marietta, Minn.; George, Earie, Mrs. Harold Selman, Mrs. Clarence Tilbury, Milton and Mrs. William Nelson, all of near Canby; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Wenthe of Sumner, Mrs. William Hyman and Mrs. Frieda Langston of Hawkeye; two brothers, William Jarchow of Fitzgerald, Ga., and John Jarchow of near Randalia.
The esteem in which Mrs. Laabs was held is evidenced by the number of friends who gathered to pay her last tribute, filling the church basement and making the use of a public address system necessary. The funeral was held last Wednesday at Zachaeus Ev. Lutheran church in Canby with the English sermon based on Psalm 35:14, "I bowed down heavily; as one that mourneth for his mother."
John Jarchow of Randalia and Lizzie Hyman of Hawkeye left Monday morning for the funeral, returning Thursday. Mrs. Hulda Bender, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schwarzenstein of New Hampton, Albert Laabs and Fredericka Schwarzenstein of Fredericksburg also attended the services.
