The following obituary is reprinted with permission of Zabka Funeral Home, Seward, NE.

Phyllis Jean Hicks was born on May 15, 1934, at her grandparents farm home near Western, NE; to Lorenz F. and Esther (Rohr) Bartels and passed away on October 15, 2014, in Lincoln, NE; at the age of 80 years and 5 months. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church near Tobias, NE. She grew up in the Western and Tobias area graduating from Tobias High School in 1952.

She married Eugene Hicks of Seward on July 25, 1954. To this union were born two children, Shelley and Brian. During their 60 years of marriage they lived in York and Western and the last years in Seward. Phyllis retired from Concordia University Nebraska in 1996 after serving as an Administration Secretary in Link Library for over 30 years. She also assisted her husband in their business at Hicks Electric with bookkeeping etc. Phyllis was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and by many friends.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gene of Seward, daughter, Shelley and husband Tony Saltzman of Seward, two grandsons, Cory and wife Jen Wood and their children, Solarra and Saylor Wood of Seward, NE; and Casey and Rachel Wood and their children Peyton, Rowan and Kingston Wood of Seward, NE; one sister, Sharon Pribyl and husband Reuben of Western, NE, brothers-in-law, Bob Hicks of Grand Island, NE; Ron Hicks and wife Cinda of Lincoln, NE; sisters-in-law, Cheryl and husband Gary Busch of Arvada, CO; numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, Bob and Thelma Hicks, Son, Brian Gene and great granddaughter, Gabbriella Wood and sister-in-law, Barbara Crook.


Visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Zabka Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Scott Bruick officiating. Burial will follow at Seward Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hicks family for later designation.
