James Chilton “Chilt” Griffith, Sr., was born on 26 April 1866 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky, son of Meredith Griffith and Louisa Hensley. He was a farmer and blacksmith. James was married to Martha “Lady” Banks on 9 September 1888 in Lawrence County. Martha was born on 24 December 1870 in Lawrence County, daughter of David Banks. She died from tuberculosis on 8 February 1916 and was buried on 10 February in Hensley cemetery. James later married Ellen (_____) Hensley. She was previously married and the mother of Arnold, Oral, Wade, Conner, Claudia, Hillman, and Maudie Hensley. James died from tuberculosis on 28 June 1943 in Grayson, Carter Co., Kentucky, and was buried on June 30th also in Hensley Cemetery.
