Martinsburg Herald, [Friday] December 27, 1929: JOHN B. McGRAW
John B. McGraw of Henrietta, mention of whose death was made in last week's Herald, was born on a farm on Piney Creek, Dec. 10, 1855, a son of John T. and Hannah Brumbaugh McGraw. He was united in marriage April 22, 1880, with Miss Loretta Acker. Mr. McGraw was a prosperous farmer all his life until a few years ago, when he retired from active farming and turned over the farm to his son, Lloyd, who, with his family, occupy a house right beside the homestead dwelling. Mr. McGraw had devoted his time to the care of his invalid wife, who has not walked a step for five years. She is so afflicted that she is also deprived of the power of speech, and at 9 o'clock Thursday morning, Dec. 19, no one else was in the house when her husband suddenly collapsed and died before her eyes. Their son Lester, who resides with his parents, had just left with the milk for the creamery at Curryville. Mrs. Lloyd McGraw, who was accustomed to assisting in the care of the invalid, stepped in to attend her as usual, and discovered Mr. McGraw lying dead on the floor. He had evidently just died, as only a few moments before his son Lloyd had heard him walking around in the house.
She called her husband, who quickly phoned for a doctor and called the creamery at Curryville, to get Lester home again. Nothing could be done, however, as life was extinct.
Mr. McGraw was active in affairs in North Woodbury township, having served three terms on the school board, acting as president and treasurer for a number of years. He also served a six-year term as road supervisor. He was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran church at this place.
He is survived by his wife and four children Ezra A. McGraw of Altoona; Mrs. Bertha Logue of Woodbury; Lloyd E., of Henrietta, and Lester at home. Four sisters and one brother survive: Mrs. Elizabeth Reininger of Altoona, Mrs. Sarah Negley of Stonerstown; Mrs. Jane Hann of Scalp Level; Mrs. Margaret Brumbaugh of Williamsburg, and Andrew McGraw of Martinsburg, and twenty-three grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held in St. Matthews Lutheran church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. D. L. Shaffer. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.
