Funeral services for Donna Corbett Sloan, 53, will be held at eleven a.m., Friday, November 14, 2014 at Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, SC. Reverend William Parker will officiate. A graveside service will be held at four p.m. at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in North, SC, officiated by Reverend Eric Sloan.Mrs. Sloan will lie in state for the hour preceding each service. The family will receive friends in the Welsh Neck sanctuary immediately following the eleven a.m. service.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Welsh Neck Baptist Church in Society Hill, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.Mrs. Sloan, wife of Reverend Walter Eric Sloan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November eleventh with her family and friends at her bedside.Born in Orangeburg, SC to the late Laurie Benjamin “Bill” and the late Barbara Reed Corbett, Mrs. Sloan was the youngest of four children. She was recognized as an Outstanding Graduate and Valedictorian of her graduating class at North High School. Named a President’s Scholar atCharleston Southern University, she continued her studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.She married the Reverend Walter Eric Sloan in 1984 and was a proud mother to her two sons. She fostered and mentored many young people, making differences in many lives.Always an active member in church and a devout Christian, Mrs. Sloan has served in ministry alongside her husband. Throughout the years, she has served various roles in different churches including youth minister, church secretary, and choir director. She is a member of Welsh NeckBaptist Church.Mrs. Sloan was a cheerful and compassionate soul with a passion for music. Often performing in her church, Mrs. Sloan was a gifted musician and composer. She enjoyed both directing and singing in her church choir. Known for her quick wit and good-natured jokes, Mrs. Sloanenjoyed making people laugh. Fascinated with different cultures and foreign places, she was a collector of world coins. She enjoyed wood carving as a hobby and could turn small pieces of wood into beautiful treasures. An avid reader, Mrs. Sloan immersed herself in stories of all genres and subjects. She read an average of one hundred books a year. She also took a special interest in researching family history and genealogy—tracing her family lineage back to some of the earliest known records.Mrs. Sloan is survived by her husband, Reverend W. Eric Sloan; sons, Nathan of Columbia and Matthew of Society Hill; sisters, Laurietta Bickley and Janet Peele of North; nieces, Melanie Bickley of Asheville and Deanne Peele of North; and nephews, Todd and Lance Peele also of North. She is also survived by her embraced-as-a-daughter, Stephanie Davis, and her children, Caleb, Kaden, and Bennie Davis of Swansea. She is predeceased by her brother, Dean.
