JAMES C. DOWNER DIES AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS
Was 79 Years Old and Had Lived in Atchison 15 Years--Civil War Veteran
James C. Downer died at 8:30 o'clock this morning at his home, 840 Spring street. Pneumonia fever caused his death and his fatal illness lasted a little over a week.
Mr. Downer was born in northeast Pennsylvania 79 years ago. He came to Chicago when a young man and when the Civil war broke out enlisted from there, serving in the Union army three years.
After the war he lived in St. Joseph, Mich., and later in Illinois, coming here 15 years ago, since which time he worked at his trade as carpenter here.
Mr. Downer is survived by his widow and by his three children, W. E. and E. B. Downer of Atchison and Mrs. H. B. Wilson of Joplin, Mo.
The funeral services will be held from the residence at 3 o'clock
Thursday afternoon, the Rev. R. L. Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill.

He was a soldier in the Civil War and participated in the following engagements: Wilson Creek, Mo. ; Fort Donaldson, and Shiloh, Tenn. ; Corinth; Champion Hills; Big Black, and siege of Vicksburg, Miss; Mission Ridge; Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta, Ga.
He was discharged 11 Sept, 1864.
