Mr. Winton N. Arnold, 66, well known Hancock county farmer, fatally shot his wife, Mrs. Della Collins Arnold, 60, at their home near Devereux on Thursday afternoon last, about 3 o'clock, according to sheriff T.B. Hightower and County Policeman R.D. Smith, who investigated the tragedy.
According to the officers, Mr. Arnold came into the house about 3 o'clock and told his daughter, Miss Thelma Arnold,
"I have just killed your mother and I am going to walk off a piece" Before Miss Arnold could comprehend the situation, the officers said Mr. Arnold walked to the back porch and shot himself, falling a few feet from his wife's
body with the pistol still in his hand.
No reason could be advanced for the tragedy which cast a gloom over the Devereux community and the entire county as friends and acquaintances were stunned by the sudden news of the fatal shootings.
Mr. and Mrs. Arnold are survived by three sons, Dr. W.O. Arnold, West Palm Beach, Florida; Dr. S.R. Arnold, Louisville, Kentucky; and W.L. Arnold, Birmingham, Alabama;
three daughters, Mrs. Hillery Thomas, Birmingham, Alabama; Mrs. Sumter Courson, and Miss Thelma Arnold, Devereux.
Mr. Arnold is survived by three brothers, H.V. Arnold, Devereux; A.M. Arnold, Macon and W.B. Arnold, Birmingham. A sister, Mrs. Annie Binion, Macon.
Also surviving Mrs. Arnold are two sisters, Mrs. J.B. Kennedy, Sr., Milledgeville and Mrs. A.M. Arnold, Macon; a brother, Bob Collins, Miami, Florida.
The bodies were taken to Milledgeville and a double funeral was held on Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and interment was in the family cemetery.
