Caleb W. Brewton was enlisted on June 4, 1861, at Montgomery, Alabama, for the war. That same day he was elected 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted on April 2, 1862, and promoted again on July 7, 1862. On November 17, 1864, he tendered his resignation as Captain: "This Regiment is without field officers with the exception of Colonel. I am the Senior Captain in the Regiment and being satisfied that I cannot be promoted, but that my juniors are to be promoted over me, I am anxious to get out of the way." He was resigned on November 30, 1864.
