FN US NAVY - KOREA

CALAIS – Ross Edward Cookson, 82, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at his home in Wartrace, TN, with his son and daughter by his side. Ross was born in St. Stephen, NB, on October 13, 1932, son of the late William and Edna (Smith) Cookson.


He attended school in Calais and put up ice in the Magurrewock until moving to Freeport where he worked in a shoe factory and for LL Bean. Ross enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War and served as a fireman aboard the USWS Quincy CA-71. Upon his father's death he returned home to help take care of his mother. Ross worked in various retail stores throughout the Calais area and was a member of Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion in Calais, and a former member of St. Croix Lodge No.46 A.F. & A.M. He was a faithful member of Baring Baptist Church for many years where he served as Deacon.


In addition to his parents, Ross was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Bartlett) Cookson; a daughter, Orene Cookson Clark; and two granddaughters, Tammy Lynn and Sonja Jean Clark. Surviving are his two sons, Ross Cookson Jr. of Calais, and William Cookson and his wife, Amy of Wartrace, TN; three daughters, Yvonne Morrell and her companion, Dan Merryfield of Robbinston, Dolores Moores and husband, Kenny of Lubec, and Debbie Cookson of Vasselboro; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.


A celebration of Ross' life will be held at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery with military honors. (Bangor Daily News 11/11/2014)
