He was born in Fieldon on June 3, 1944, and was the son of the late Russell & Hazel (Schaaf) Thompson.
Raymond grew up in Kane, where his father worked at the old Kane Croft farm, and graduated from Jersey Community High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and was employed as a mechanic with various shops, and retired from C&W Equipment in Jerseyville after many years of service.
He loved fishing, hunting, along with many other outdoor activities, but especially enjoyed times spent with all his family.
He married Doris Cates on Aug. 10, 1974 in Jerseyville, and have resided in Fieldon during their married life. Between the two of them, they raised eight children.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Thompson of Fieldon; step children & their spouses, Dorothy & Darrell Talley of Carrollton, Wesley Hunter of Clayton, In., Norma & Ned PInkerton of Carrollton, Carol & Tim Dougherty of Kane, Cheryl Hamel of Carrollton, and Yvonne & Richard Harp of Carrollton; a son in law, Kenneth Johnson of Granite City; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister & brother in law, Verna Kay & Perry Ontis of Fieldon; and a half sister, Shirley Johnson of Alton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, LeDonna Johnson; a step son in law, John Hamel; two step granddaughters, Chloe Murphy and Mya Dougherty; a half sister, Edna Farris.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m., Tuesday until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Burial will be in the Kane Cemetery with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.
Memorials may be given to The Chloe Foundation in care of the funeral home.
