Born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania November 14, 1853, John Ashenfelter, the owner of the Ashenfelter fruit orchard in Ouray, Colorado, was one of 12 children born to Daniel Ashenfelter and Caroline Naylor. John passed away at age 57 at his home in Ouray on July 17, 1910. He had been ill with heart trouble. His physician and personal friend, Dr. W. W. Rowan was at his side.
John Ashenfelter and his first wife, Lena, lived in Ouray. In declining health, Lena passed away October 15, 1903. She is buried in Colorado Springs.
On July 10, 1905, John married Amanda Rosella "Rose" Hurlihy in Colorado Springs. Rose had been married to a Mr. Jewett, and they had a daughter. She then married a Mr. Hurlihy, and they had a daughter, Mary Katherine Hurlihy. She had one other relationship with no children.
Mr. Ashenfelter is survived by his wife, Rose; his stepdaughter Mary Katherine Hurlihy Ashenfelter (adopted by him); two sisters, Mrs. Charley Bowley and Mrs. Charles Snarr of Ouray; and one brother, Mose Ashenfelter, of Idaho.
The funeral service was conducted in Ouray by the Elks' lodge, and the remains were conducted to Cedar Cemetery in Ouray where they were interred.
