John was the son of John and Hannah (Ireson) Hammond. He married Tabatha C. Trasher in 1861.

After a long and very painful sickness John E. Hammond, a native of Marblehead, and a Union veteran, passed away Saturday afternoon at his home, 16 Washington street, in his 86th year. He enlisted in Company C, Eighth infantry, M.V.M, under Captain Knott V. Martin, and served for the entire war. Mr. Hammond was a mason by trade, but retired a number of years ago. He was generally esteemed as a man and citizen.

Surviving him are his wife, five sons, Foster, John E., Jr., Harry, Robert, all of this town, and Clinton, of Saugus, two daughters, Mrs. Charles W. Barclay and Mrs. E. Munroe Brown, a brother, Frank H., of Berkeley, Calif., and two sisters, Mrs. Lucretia Ballard of Lynn and Mrs. Sarah I. Welch of Berkeley, Calif.

With Rev. R.T. Broeg officiating funeral services were held for him Tuesday afternoon, the G.A.R., of which he was a member, also participating with the burial in Waterside Cemetery.
