Mabelle Van Arkel was born on July 8, 1910 at Pella, Iowa. She was the daughter of Peter and Nettie Dykstra De Jong. As a young girl, she attended country school at Black Oak No. 6 near Leighton. She completed her schooling from Central Academy in Pella. After graduation, Mabelle taught in several country schools in Mahaska County for seven years.

On February 25, 1937, she was united in marriage with Russell Van Arkel, a son of Henry and Mary Neels Van Arkel. To this union two daughters were born: Nancine and Judy. After celebrating 51 years of marriage, Russell passed away on May 11, 1988.

Mabelle passed away at the Long Term Care Unit of Pella Regional Health Center on July 15, 2005

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, their spouses and their families. They are: Nancine and Sam De Haan of Scottsboro, AL, Maureen De Haan of Denver, CO, Julie and Kyle Jansen of Holland, MI, Mark and Lori De Haan of Ankeny, and Judy and Syburn De Vries of Pella.

Of her original family, Mabelle leaves four sisters: Grace De Hamer, Ada De Jong, Charlotte De Jong and Esther Vande Lune and one brother, Gilbert De Jong.

She was preceded in death by her husband Russell, her parents, Peter and Nettie De Jong, and three sisters: Pearl (Mrs. Merle Van Steenis), Clara De Jong and Nina De Jong.

Mabelle was baptized and made her profession of faith at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton and was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. She enjoyed playing the keyboard.
