In February 1923 her father Albert Boxum died at the age of 43 years in the unincorporated community of Dispatch, located about 6 miles northeast of Downs, Smith County, in the northern part of Kansas.

In 1925 Bertha Boxum (3 years old, born in Kansas), her mother Lena Boxum (39, Kansas, widow), and siblings Peter (15, Kansas), Bertus (13, Kansas), Fannie (11, Kansas), Margret (10, Kansas), Harold (8, Kansas), Harry (6, Kansas) and Loyd (5, Kansas) were living on their own farm in Lincoln [Township, Smith County], Kansas.

In April 1930 Bertha Boxum (8), her mother Lena Boxum (45, widow, farmer), siblings Pete A (19, laborer), Albertus M (18, laborer), Fannie (17), Margaret (16), Harold (13), Henry (12) and Lloyd (10) were living on their own farm in still Lincoln Township, Smith County, Kansas.

Bertha Boxum married the four years older Harold Hofer. They had daughters Verena Marie, born September 1, 1943 in Beloit, Rock County, Wisconsin, and Cheryl (McCoy).

In March 1954 Bertha (32 years old), her husband Harold Hofer (36), and their daughters Verena (10) and Cheril (7) were living in the small city of Portis, Bethany Township, Osborne County, Kansas.

Her husband Harold Hofer died in July 1999 at the age of 81 years in Portis, Bethany Township, Osborne County, Kansas. Widow Bertha died in Osborne County too, in May 2012, at the age of 90 years.
