rank W. Ahalt, 89, of Knight Place, passed away Monday, July 3, 2000, at Beacon Place, after an extended illness.

There will be a private family burial. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Guilford Baptist Church, West Market Street.

Born in Cranford, N.J., Aug. 14, 1910, the son of Roy M. and Nannette Woog Ahalt, Frank graduated from Colgate University in 1931 and from Yale University in 1933 with degrees in electrical engineering. He married Marie Louise Olson, on Nov. 4, 1933. In 1936, he was employed by Western Electric Co., Cicero, Ill., and lived with Marie in Downers Grove, Ill., where they had three daughters. He was a charter member there of both the Kiwanis International Club and the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (the barbershop singing chorus) and was on the local school board. In the fall of 1950, he was transferred to North Carolina by Western Electric to help establish the plant in Burlington and the family moved to Greensboro in March, 1951.

Mr. Ahalt retired from Western Electric in 1970 after 34 years of service. Shortly after "retirement", he began doing water searches for Bainbridge & Dance, a nearby well drilling company and later took over meter reading and maintenance in many housing areas for Hydraulics, Ltd.

His wife, Marie Olson Ahalt, died unexpectedly in 1975 and Frank continued to work with Hydraulics until illness forced his second retirement in 1999. During this time, he was a very active member of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. (Greensboro Tarheel Chorus), where he also sang bass in a barbershop quartet, "The Four-Tune-Nuts." He also sang regularly and faithfully with the Guilford Baptist Church choir until last year.

He is survived by three daughters, Nannette A. Ramsey (Mrs. Walter A.) of Shelbyville, Ill., Francine A. Strayhorn (Mrs. Earl J.) of Greensboro and Laura A. Harris of Burlington. His brother, Roy M. Ahalt, lives in San Diego, Calif. His grandchildren include, Richard Scott Kinsey of St. Cloud, Minn., Deborah S. Jenkins (Mrs. Weldon L.) of Graham, Martin Franklin Harris of Bloomington, Ind., and Joseph Robert Harris of Columbia, S.C. Mr. Ahalt was predeceased by two brothers, Joshua Dawson Ahalt of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Edgar Shafer Ahalt of Downers Grove, Ill. His passing also follows the loss of two grandsons, Earl Jeffrey Strayhorn of Greensboro and Steven Frank Kinsey of Cicero, Ill. His three great-grandchildren, Weldon Leighton, Preston Earl and Sierra Marie Jenkins, live with their parents, Deborah S. and Weldon L. Jenkins in Graham.

The family will be available at the church half an hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Beacon Place, 2502 Summit Ave., or to Hospice at Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27405.
