Short funeral service was held from the residence, on Tuesday under the auspices of the Union Veteran Union Camp No 50, of Reed City of which he was a member, as he was also He was also a member of Steedman Post No 198, G. A. R., of Reed City, Rev. C.T. Jack officiating, assisted by Rev. O. B. Thurston. Internment was made in the Wilson Cemetery.
He was a land looker until Sept 3rd 1864 when he enlisted and served on the United States Gunboat Peri in the Mississippi
Squadron until the close of the war when he located on a homestead one mile west of town.
In 1869 William married Miss Mary A Auer, daughter of the esteemed citizen J. H. Auer.
Leaving to grieve is his wife and five children, one son Oscar, and four daughters, Mrs. Anna Fulcher of Iron River, Mrs. Leone Porquette of Central Lake, and the Misses Dora and Elsie.
Besides his family, he leaves one sister, Mrs Pratt of Colorado, and three brothers, residents of Michigan.
Also attending from out of town were: Mrs. Anna Fulcher of Iron River, Orlo McDonald, his brother, Albert McDonald & wife of Tustin, Henry Auer of Cadillac.
The following soldiers from the U.V.U. Camp acted as pall bearers: Amos Rosenberg, Chas A Randall, Oliver Barrett, Robert H. Allan, C. W. Beecher, and Daniel N. Steadman, Funeral Director, W.P. Switzer.
