HUCKABA

On June 17, 2007 Dewey Huckaba, 85, passed from this life into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A long time Winnemucca resident, Dewey had been born in 1921 to Jable and Ettie Huckaba in Lawrenceburg, TN. Growing up during the depression, Dewey had started his first job as just a child. Working as a sharecropper, Dewey would later move to the west coast where he would work in the CC Camps of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He also worked in the lumber industry and in building airports.
During his time at Burns, OR, Dewey met and fell in love with Myrtle "MM" York. The young couple was married November 21, 1942. Unbeknownst to the newlyweds, the young couple had conceived their first child Kenneth Edwards Huckaba, who would be born while Dewey was away at war. During World War II, Dewey entered the service of his country in the United States Army. Inducted on December 23, 1942, Dewey was assigned to the 469th Army Anti Aircraft Battalion.
Working his way up to the rank of Sergeant, Dewey served in the Pacific Theater during the Island Hopping Campaigns around the Philippines and New Guinea. Dewey's religious beliefs led him to believe that end of World War II was foretold in the Bible and true to his beliefs the war ended just when he had predicted. Dewey was discharged from the Army on December 8, 1945 and was home in time for Christmas with his wife and new son. Dewey would move with his family to Winnemucca after the war where he lived out the rest of his life. During his time in Winnemucca Dewey worked at the Humboldt Hotel for many years until he realized his dream of running his own business.
Working as a carpenter, Dewey worked on hundreds of homes and remodeling projects. Dewey's passion during these years was to follow the success of his son Kenny Huckaba as he performed with their band "Edwards and Wilde" in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. In 1977 Dewey would lose the love of his life, his wife of 35 years, to a battle with cancer. Sadly he would also lose his precious son Kenny to cancer some years later in 1986.
On June 19, 1978 Dewey married Mable Davidson of Winnemucca. This new marriage provided Dewey with a very large "adopted" family and was a true blessing from God. Shortly after their new marriage Dewey joined the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office where he worked as a Detention Deputy. Dewey was instrumental in developing policies for management of the then new jail facilities. During the coming years Dewey would return to construction, starting the "dbr Siding Dewey and his company were responsible for the sales and installation of vinyl, aluminum and steel siding throughout northern Nevada. Dewey would soon make the decision to accept Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.
Dewey would join the United Methodist Church and later the Community Bible Church. When the Community Bible Church merged with Winnemucca Christian Fellowship, Dewey became a lifelong member of that congregation. Dewey served with a new found passion for life as an usher, deacon, and AWANA Club leader. Dewey's love for his family, church family and the community stemmed from his deep, deep love for Jesus Christ. No one who knew Dewey could ever forget his great big hugs or his truly sacrificial love for others.
On June 6th, 1996 Dewey lost his second wife, Mable Huckaba, after an extensive battle with heart problems. During the following years Dewey continued to fight the good fight and served as a living example of Christ's love. In recent months Dewey started a new battle with lung problems. Despite his best efforts Dewey succumbed to this battle at Humboldt General Hospital on Father's Day, a very fitting day considering the amazing father he had been to his entire family. Dewey was preceded in death by his first wife Myrtle "MM" Huckaba and son Kenneth Edwards Huckaba.
He was also preceded by his second wife Mable Huckaba and his brother Theodore Huckaba. Dewey is survived by his sister Marie Rockwell and husband Rocky of Paradise, CA; sister in law Sadie Lee Huckaba and family of Indio, CA; daughter in law Sherrie Paiz and husband Ray of Las Vegas, NV; daughter Pam Cross and husband Russ of Los Alamatos, CA; daughter Pat Abrams and husband Paul of Vacaville, CA; daughter Debbie Formby of Winnemucca; son Gary Kuskie and wife Barbara of Winnemucca; son Robert Davidson and wife Andrea of Winnemucca; 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, as well as his extensive church family. A public viewing is planned for Wednesday, June 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Albertson's Funeral Home 47 West First Street in Winnemucca. Services for Dewey will be held at Winnemucca Christian Fellowship Church at 4380 Grass Valley Road on Thursday the 21, 2007 at 10 a.m.
Services will be officiated by Dewey's personal friend. Pastor Mark Clendenen with the assistance of Pastor Daniel Sexton. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Albertson's Funeral Home of Winnemucca.
