Merlin took a job with my dad herding sheep. We were much attracted to each other and began to go steady. In the spring Merlin spent three weeks in the hills without a thing to read but the back of an old magazine which he said he memorized word for word. He sent word to me to send him something to read so I sent him the ‘Book of Mormon' and ‘A Hundred Years of Mormonism'. He read both books many times.
"About the first of June we rode up one Sunday to see him, myself, Earl and Lilis and Charley and Tina Kunzler. He saw us coming and shot off his gun to let us know he had. He then come scrabling down the hill to meet us. I'll never forget how he looked: a heavy growth of whiskers, his overalls in tatters and four sizes too small. His had worn completely out so he was wearing a pair of my brothers which he had found and they were much smaller, but he was tickled to death to see us."
