The Moultrie Observer -Moultrie, Georgia -Tues, Sept 3, 1946

J.N. Key Sr., 93, Claimed by Death at His Rural Home

Pioneer Southwest Georgia Farmer Buried Tuesday.

"J. N. Key, Sr. 93, died in his home on Moultrie, Route 3.at 1 p.m. Monday. He had just finished eating his midday meal when he was stricken, death claiming him almost instantly. The stout heart which had kept him going until he was one of the oldest persons in the county had finally become so weary it couldn't function any longer.

Mr. Key was a native of Irwin county and was 14 years old when Yankee soldiers captured Jefferson Davis following the close of the War Between the States, not far from where he

was born. He came to Colquitt county 68 years ago. At that time he was 23, having been born December 29, 1852. Mr. Key was raised on a farm and spent all of his life on one.

When he came to Colquitt it was sparsely settled, in reality, a frontier to the young man from the then old county of Irwin. He joined energetically with the other pioneers in the development of the community in which he spent his long and useful life.

He was interested in the schools and churches, and for many years had been a member of the Oakdale Baptist church.

From it funeral services were conducted for him Tuesday afternoon by Reverend Frank Clark of Norman Park, assisted by Rev. Garnie Brand.

Pallbearers were Lawton Key, Albert Key, Frank Key, Johnnie Key, James Key, and Junior Causey.

The Colquitt county patriarch is survived by a son, six daughters, 49 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The children are J.N. Key, Jr., Moultrie Route 3; Mrs. B.L. Register, Winter Haven, Fla.; Mrs. M.L. Tucker and Mrs. Gordon Pryer, Moultrie; Mrs. John Hamilton, Chula; Mrs. B.E. Hobbs, Coolidge; Mrs. Berry Pyles, Moultrie.
