BURIAL AT BELLEVILLE CONSIDERED PROBABLE

A Fatal Encounter. Virginia (Nev.), January 7. – A private letter from Belleville, dated the 4th, and received here to-day, says that Charles E. Buck, Secretary of the Northern Belle Mining Company, shot Levi Keithly, keeper of the company’s water office, at noon to-day in the office of the Company. Keithly died about 3 o’clock. (San Francisco Chronicle, 1/8/1879)

A private letter from Belleville states that Charles E. Boch (sic), secretary of the Northern Belle Mining Company, shot and killed Levi RITHLY, a bookkeeper in the company’s office, on the 4th. (Reno Evening Gazette, 9 Jan 1879)

An Unfortunate Affair.

Yesterday week an affray took place at Belleville between two well-known citizens of that place which resulted in the death of one of the participants. C. A. Buck, who is the secretary of the Northern Belle mine, and Levi Keithly, clerk of the water company, owned by the Northern Belle corporation, had a misunderstanding about $2.50 in the office of the company. No other persons were present at the time, and therefore the full particulars are not known. The result of the difficulty, however, was the shooting of Keithly by Buck. The shot took effect in the head and the injured man lived about three hours. Both men bore unblemished characters and were sober and always peaceably disposed. The unfortunate affair is regretted by all the friends and acquaintances of both parties. (Esmeralda Herald, 1/11/1879)

*****
The Board of Pardons was in session last Monday and Tuesday, and among other acts, granted a pardon to C.E. Bock, who killed Levi Keithly at Belleville four years ago this month. Buck was sent for ten years and had served three years and seven months. His many friends here warmly congratulated him upon his release. (Candelaria True Fissure, 1/13/1883)
