Thank You for visiting and remembering my beloved Momma and best friend ever. She was truly a special and kind hearted lady who helped many people, taking them into her home, over the years until she could no longer do it. God bless all who visit and take a moment to remember this remarkable woman.

༺⊰❁ Meriel Anna Steinberger Sterling was the daughter and youngest child of Ralph Irvin and Alice Roosevelt Powell Steinberger, born at home on August 1, 1930 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. Meriel was my beloved Mother, ever loved and never a burden. She had a heart of gold.
When my Momma was born the country was in the Great Depression and times were hard. When she was around 3 or 4 years of age she recalled how they were going painfully hungry. A neighbor couple often gave them food from hunts that literally kept them alive. She remembered having possum, which had to be fed milk for three days to purify the meat before cooking it as possums will eat just about anything. She also remembered eating a turtle once as well. Finally her Dad was tired of them going hungry while living in the city and began to look for a way to live in the country on a farm so they could grow and raise their own food. He met with Grant McClintock who's family did not help him, he being a disabled. Grandpa made a deal with Grant and the family helped him out and saw he was buried when he passed away and my Grandpa received the farmland. At about 10 years old my Momma moved with the family to the farm on Broadgage Road in South Vienna, Clark County, Ohio. There they worked the land, raised their own animals, and never went hungry again.
In 1945 my Momma received her certificate for finishing grade school at Pleasant View School in Clark County. By 1948 after Grant's passing in January 1946, her parents sold the farmland and moved to Gould City, Michigan and the family began building the resort that would come to be known as Beaver Bay Resort. The school system was not very good in the area so during her last year of school Momma moved in with her Aunt Meriel and Uncle Leon Loe (where her Grandma Cora Powell also lived) and she completed her senior year at Springfield High in Clark County, Ohio. Momma would go up to the resort and help build it during the summers and said there were many deer, panthers, and bears up there at the time. While at Aunt Meriel's she remembered her Grandma Cora would read her bible every day and she would tell Momma she was praying for her as she knew my Mom was seeking God's Heart.
She went on to business school and got her degree in secretarial work. She worked as secretary for a time at her church, Springfield Lutheran Church. Then she worked for an attorney as his secretary. She met my Dad, Robert Sterling the winter of late 1952/1953. Her sister introduced them as she had been my Dad's nurse. They dated and mom said he was always kind, gentle, never spoke a bad word about anyone, and was always a perfect gentleman. She said she fell in love with him because he was so sweet and kind. She would laugh as she told me that Grandma Cora would always chaperon and sit in the living room by the window while she and dad sat on the swing out on the porch. By June 18, 1953 Mom and Dad married at the Springfield Lutheran Church by her minister Dr. Mueller, with Dotie Weng, her best friend, as her bridesmaid of honor and my Dad's brother Donald as best man.
They lived for a time in Amelia, Clermont Count, Ohio and then moved to a home they bought in Foster, Warren County, Ohio. At one time Momma had sought out an attorney's advice about adopting my half sister Elva Mae Sterling Whitlock. She was misbehaving badly and Mom thought if she adopted Elva she would realize how much Mom loved her and settle down. The attorney advised her not to adopt Elva as he said it rarely worked out and often the children later caused legal problems. My Dad agreed with the attorney and it was decided that Mom would not adopt Elva Mae.

It certainly proved out accurate as later in life Elva caused my Momma and the family much grief though Momma had raised her with love and no differently than my sister or me. It wasn't until I was much older in my early teens that I learned she was not my Mom's daughter which surprised me at the time as she was always part of the family. Elva had continued to give my Mom's heart great sorrows up until Elva's passing. Mom and dad had two daughters together.
Momma and Dad bought a home in Loveland, Warren County, Ohio in 1959 and by September we were moved into the new home where the family grew and prospered. The subdivision was surrounded by thick woodland and farms where the Scouts held many meetings and camping trips.
During the early years of my parents marriage my Mom accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She then began attending the Baptist churches as Dad was practicing Baptist. She was very active at Mainville Baptist Church. She and dad would go on visitation together, they were active in the office as Dad was a deacon for a time. They worked on the bulletin for Sunday services and taught classes. They were often involved in the many various functions of the church, choir, dinners, caroling at Christmas, activities for the youths and visiting the sick. There wasn't much they were not involved in with the church. Later in life Mom was the teacher for the 9-10 year old boys and for the Junior Church. The kids loved her as much as she loved them.
In 1969 my Dad lost his job due to the company moving out of state and Mom went to work for Loveland Pet Products which at the time was located across the road from the subdivision where we lived. She was in the shipping department and soon went to work in the office in the order department taking orders for pet products. This aloud us to be able to buy pet products and fish at a discount and our home was always filled with the blessings of the love of our pets. She loved to feed the birds and wildlife and there were many bird feeders and feeding stations located in our yard. Momma loved to read and loved novels based on history, especially about the settling of our great nation. She enjoyed music and learned how to crochet. Her favorite movies were Cross Creek, Lonesome Dove, The Godfather, The Titanic, Gone With The Wind, and Ben Hur, and The Rocket Boys. Mom also loved sports, especially baseball and the Cincinnati Reds. Every year she would tell me about the coming of Spring and opening day and the parade. How she loved the Reds from childhood sitting on her fathers knee at age three listening to them on the radio all the way to her death~she loved the Cincinnati Reds. Every chance she had she would watch them on tv. If the game wasn't on tv she would listen to it on the radio. She was at the game the night Tom Seaver broke his pitching record and the crowed roared! She would tell me about the play offs and the All Star game. She wished they would play baseball all year long. I think they should, too. I know she is watching the Reds from Heaven now and likely playing some baseball herself in Heaven as she did as a kid. Know you have a beautiful Angel watching over you from Heaven Cincinnati Reds...cheering you on!
Mom later had problems from osteoporosis which had not been properly diagnosed and had damaged her bones. She had to retire early when it was diagnosed after a fall broke her foot in three places and did damage to her back. By the early 1990's Mom had retired.
Throughout my life Momma took people into the home whenever they needed help or would give them food and clothing as needed. The home was often filled with other relatives. Some would say we did without due to this but I say we were richly blessed by it and the love that flowed throughout the home. Some things money can never buy.
Mom had trouble with her eyes most of her life and I was always willing to help Mom and Dad. My sister and I were both there for our parents. We moved to the west side of Cincinnati in Hamilton County where my dad passed in 1999 leaving my Momma alone. I stayed with her and helped her out as she could no longer see to drive. She was very active until the summer of 2011. During that year she went into the hospital due to low blood count caused from anemia in November and was there for 5 days. By the next Spring she was much better and was off oxygen. The doctor talked her into getting a pneumonia shot even tho we told the doctor she had bad reactions to it and her prior doctor had told her to never take it due to her bad reaction to the shot. The doctor insisted she would be fine and Mom listened. Soon Momma was very sick from a reaction to the shot, just as the prior doctor had told. From then on Momma's health deteriorated over time. She no longer cared to see the doctor. She felt she never received the proper care to get well. In time it was her problems with her heart that caused problems to set in which led to her death. I remember on her birthday she had turned 84 and was so surprised and happy she had made it to 84 years of age. When our cat was killed it just seemed to take it out of her and she no longer was interested in life. As much as we tried to encourage her she finally let go and went to be with the Lord in a much better and more peaceful place. She is now in her Heavenly home where she is again with Dad and many others in the family who had gone on before her. She is ever so very loved and always deeply missed.
Rest in peace now Momma. May the Lord Jesus Christ keep you ever in his loving and peaceful presence. We love you!

The Heavenly City

I sigh for the heavenly country,
Where the heavenly people pass,
And the sea is as quiet as a mirror
Of beautiful beautiful glass.
I walk in the heavenly field,
With lilies and poppies bright,
I am dressed in a heavenly coat
Of polished white.
When I walk in the heavenly parkland
My feet on the pasture are bare,
Tall waves the grass, but no harmful
Creature is there.
At night I fly over the housetops,
And stand on the bright moony beams;
Gold are all heaven's rivers,
And silver her streams.

She wished they would play baseball all year long. I think they should, too. I know she is watching the Reds from Heaven now and likely playing some baseball herself in Heaven as she did as a kid. Mom later had problems from osteoporosis which had not been properly diagnosed and had damaged her bones. She had to retire early when it was diagnosed after a fall broke her foot in three places and did damage to her back. By the early 1990's Mom had retired.
Throughout my life Momma took people into the home whenever they needed help or would give them food and clothing as needed. The home was often filled with other relatives. Some would say we did without due to this but I say we were richly blessed by it and the love that flowed throughout the home. Some things money can never buy.
Mom had trouble with her eyes most of her life and I was always willing to help Mom and Dad. My sister and I were both there for our parents. We moved to the west side of Cincinnati in Hamilton County where my dad passed in 1999 leaving my Momma alone. I stayed with her and helped her out as she could no longer see to drive. She was very active until the summer of 2011. During that year she went into the hospital due to low blood count caused from anemia in November and was there for 5 days. By the next Spring she was much better and was off oxygen. The doctor talked her into getting a pneumonia shot even tho we told the doctor she had bad reactions to it and her prior doctor had told her to never take it due to her bad reaction to the shot. The doctor insisted she would be fine and Mom listened. Soon Momma was very sick from a reaction to the shot, just as the prior doctor had told. From then on Momma's health deteriorated over time. She no longer cared to see the doctor. She felt she never received the proper care to get well. In time it was her problems with her heart that caused problems to set in which led to her death. I remember on her birthday she had turned 84 and was so surprised and happy she had made it to 84 years of age. When our cat was killed it just seemed to take it out of her and she no longer was interested in life. As much as we tried to encourage her she finally let go and went to be with the Lord in a much better and more peaceful place. She is now in her Heavenly home where she is again with Dad and many others in the family who had gone on before her. She is ever so very loved and always deeply missed.
Rest in peace now Momma. May the Lord Jesus Christ keep you ever in his loving and peaceful presence. We love you!

The Heavenly City

I sigh for the heavenly country,
Where the heavenly people pass,
And the sea is as quiet as a mirror
Of beautiful beautiful glass.
I walk in the heavenly field,
With lilies and poppies bright,
I am dressed in a heavenly coat
Of polished white.
When I walk in the heavenly parkland
My feet on the pasture are bare,
Tall waves the grass, but no harmful
Creature is there.
At night I fly over the housetops,
And stand on the bright moony beams;
Gold are all heaven's rivers,
And silver her streams.
Thank You for visiting and remembering my beloved Momma and best friend ever. She was truly a special and kind hearted lady who helped many people, taking them into her home, over the years until she could no longer do it. God bless all who visit and take a moment to remember this remarkable woman.
Please no Halloween tokens on my mother's Angel Day on Oct. 31. It would be very appreciated. You may leave them up to that day as she did love the event. She absolutely loved candy corn. Thank you! Blessings.

༺⊰❁ Meriel Anna Steinberger Sterling was the daughter and youngest child of Ralph Irvin and Alice Roosevelt Powell Steinberger, born at home on August 1, 1930 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. Meriel was my beloved Mother, ever loved and never a burden. She had a heart of gold.
When my Momma was born the country was in the Great Depression and times were hard. When she was around 3 or 4 years of age she recalled how they were going painfully hungry. A neighbor couple often gave them food from hunts that literally kept them alive. She remembered having possum, which had to be fed milk for three days to purify the meat before cooking it as possums will eat just about anything. She also remembered eating a turtle once as well. Finally her Dad was tired of them going hungry while living in the city and began to look for a way to live in the country on a farm so they could grow and raise their own food. He met with Grant McClintock who's family did not help him, he being a disabled. Grandpa made a deal with Grant and the family helped him out and saw he was buried when he passed away and my Grandpa received the farmland. At about 10 years old my Momma moved with the family to the farm on Broadgage Road in South Vienna, Clark County, Ohio. There they worked the land, raised their own animals, and never went hungry again.
In 1945 my Momma received her certificate for finishing grade school at Pleasant View School in Clark County. By 1948 after Grant's passing in January 1946, her parents sold the farmland and moved to Gould City, Michigan and the family began building the resort that would come to be known as Beaver Bay Resort. The school system was not very good in the area so during her last year of school Momma moved in with her Aunt Meriel and Uncle Leon Loe (where her Grandma Cora Powell also lived) and she completed her senior year at Springfield High in Clark County, Ohio. Momma would go up to the resort and help build it during the summers and said there were many deer, panthers, and bears up there at the time. While at Aunt Meriel's she remembered her Grandma Cora would read her bible every day and she would tell Momma she was praying for her as she knew my Mom was seeking God's Heart.
She went on to business school and got her degree in secretarial work. She worked as secretary for a time at her church, Springfield Lutheran Church. Then she worked for an attorney as his secretary. She met my Dad, Robert Sterling the winter of late 1952/1953. Her sister introduced them as she had been my Dad's nurse. They dated and mom said he was always kind, gentle, never spoke a bad word about anyone, and was always a perfect gentleman. She said she fell in love with him because he was so sweet and kind. She would laugh as she told me that Grandma Cora would always chaperon and sit in the living room by the window while she and dad sat on the swing out on the porch. By June 18, 1953 Mom and Dad married at the Springfield Lutheran Church by her minister Dr. Mueller, with Dotie Weng, her best friend, as her bridesmaid of honor and my Dad's brother Donald as best man.
They lived for a time in Amelia, Clermont Count, Ohio and then moved to a home they bought in Foster, Warren County, Ohio. At one time Momma had sought out an attorney's advice about adopting my half sister Elva Mae Sterling Whitlock. She was misbehaving badly and Mom thought if she adopted Elva she would realize how much Mom loved her and settle down. The attorney advised her not to adopt Elva as he said it rarely worked out and often the children later caused legal problems. My Dad agreed with the attorney and it was decided that Mom would not adopt Elva Mae.

It certainly proved out accurate as later in life Elva caused my Momma and the family much grief though Momma had raised her with love and no differently than my sister or me. It wasn't until I was much older in my early teens that I learned she was not my Mom's daughter which surprised me at the time as she was always part of the family. Elva had continued to give my Mom's heart great sorrows up until Elva's passing. Mom and dad had two daughters together.
Momma and Dad bought a home in Loveland, Warren County, Ohio in 1959 and by September we were moved into the new home where the family grew and prospered. The subdivision was surrounded by thick woodland and farms where the Scouts held many meetings and camping trips.
During the early years of my parents marriage my Mom accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She then began attending the Baptist churches as Dad was practicing Baptist. She was very active at Mainville Baptist Church. She and dad would go on visitation together, they were active in the office as Dad was a deacon for a time. They worked on the bulletin for Sunday services and taught classes. They were often involved in the many various functions of the church, choir, dinners, caroling at Christmas, activities for the youths and visiting the sick. There wasn't much they were not involved in with the church. Later in life Mom was the teacher for the 9-10 year old boys and for the Junior Church. The kids loved her as much as she loved them.
In 1969 my Dad lost his job due to the company moving out of state and Mom went to work for Loveland Pet Products which at the time was located across the road from the subdivision where we lived. She was in the shipping department and soon went to work in the office in the order department taking orders for pet products. This aloud us to be able to buy pet products and fish at a discount and our home was always filled with the blessings of the love of our pets. She loved to feed the birds and wildlife and there were many bird feeders and feeding stations located in our yard. Momma loved to read and loved novels based on history, especially about the settling of our great nation. She enjoyed music and learned how to crochet. Her favorite movies were Cross Creek, Lonesome Dove, The Godfather, The Titanic, Gone With The Wind, and Ben Hur, and The Rocket Boys. Mom also loved sports, especially baseball and the Cincinnati Reds. Every year she would tell me about the coming of Spring and opening day and the parade. How she loved the Reds from childhood sitting on her fathers knee at age three listening to them on the radio all the way to her death~she loved the Cincinnati Reds. Every chance she had she would watch them on tv. If the game wasn't on tv she would listen to it on the radio. She was at the game the night Tom Seaver broke his pitching record and the crowed roared! She would tell me about the play offs and the All Star game.
