Walter Ray “Walt” Sims
Walter Ray Sims, the son of Nelson and Eda Renspeas Sims was born on November 7, 1928 on a farm near Longford, KS in Clay County. He departed this life October 29, 2014 at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 22 days. He attended eight years of grade school at Beach Glen School and graduated from Longofrd High School; class of 1946. Walt served in the U. S. Army 1950 – 1952, stationed mostly in Japan and Okinawa. He was employed with Shoffner Sand Company in his younger years and retired from Central Soya in 1990.He married Erma Appleman in 1953. All their married life was lived in Abilene, KS. They were God Parents to their nephew Dennis Woodall and niece Kim Woodall. Left to cherish Walt’s memory are his sister Ruth Woodall McRell, 2 sister-in-laws Pearl Sims and Jean Applemean, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Walt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, 2 sisters Norma Prater and Marjorie Reed, and two brothers; Wayne and Robert Sims.Graveside with military honors will be held for Walt Monday, November 3, 2014 at 10:30 at Abilene Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2:00 to 3:00 PM Sunday at the Danner Funeral Home. Memorials for Walt include Elsie Brooks Cancer Fund and may be sent in care of Danner Funeral Home, Box 758, Abilene, KS 67410.
