Son of Henry & Eugenia (Lawrence) Whitney.

Stephen was for a short time, with the Yale class of 1862 as well as a brief time with Sixty- Three. " For something more than two years, during the Civil War, he was a lieutenant in the Fourth United States Calvary. From 1867 to 1884, he was engaged in sugar planting in Louisiana, spending the summer in New Haven. He then returned to New Haven. He has been twice married, and has had - and presume this has - several children".
- Yale Yearbook Class of 1862

On passport application of Feb 8, 1865, he mentions that he will be accompanied by his wife Margaret, aged 23 years.

He mustered out in Nov 1863.
