George Hopper was the 12th child born to American Pioneers Zachariah and Jane (English) Hopper.

George was born in Cloverdale in 1860, the only child of Zach and Jane to be born in California. His parents got on a train shortly after his birth, travelling to Texas and then taking another wagon train back to Sonoma County, where Zachariah died in 1890.

George remained in Sonoma County, where a great many of his relatives had settled. He is noted in the book The Hopper Family written by Leona Hopper Newbill in 1966.
