Born to the Presbyterian minister family of Henry Seymour Butler and Maria Thatcher Patterson, Horace attended Princeton and graduated in 1899.

He then joined Henry Holt & Co. as a book salesman working out of Chicago where he quickly become Chicago city marketing manager for HH&C. During this time he negotiated the contract with Robert Frost for books of his poems.

He married first Jesse Valerie Skelton of Princeton, Indiana 17 Sep 1901 with two children born to this marriage before Jessie died in 1908.

On 3 May 1911 he married again to Susan Farley Rolfe and they had three children.

Horace/Susan and family moved to New York City living in Yonkers in 1920 eventually becoming 1st Vice President of HH & Co. By 1935 he and Susan had returned to Chicago where he had an apartment at 5844 South Stony Island Chicago, Illinois looking out over Lake Michigan until his passing.
