"Mr. Abram C. Wirts, formerly of Houserville, Centre Co., died at his home at Dellville, Perry county, on the 7th of April. Mr. Wirts was a soldier in the late war, member of the 148th regiment. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his departure." (CENTRE DEMOCRAT, 14 Apr 1898)

"The son of Jacob & Anna (Houser) Wirtz or Wertz, in 1860 was a blacksmith living with and/or working for farmer Cyrus Cronister in Half Moon Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania.

"A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-nine in Centre County August 19, 1862, and mustered into Federal service at Bellefonte, Centre County, August 27 as a private with Co. C, 148th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to corporal November 1, 1864, he honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia. He is listed in the company
register as "Wertz."

"He married Margaret Elizabeth Gray and fathered George B. (b. 01/04/63), Thomas S. (b. 3/15/66), Elizabeth Gray (b. 12/22/67), Alice Mae (b. 12/22/70), Anna Charlotte (b. 04/01/73), and Philip S.
