William the son of William C. Medeiros and Irene M. Medeiros of New Bedford Massachusetts enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 26 1967 in Boston. He arrived in Vietnam on November 17 where he was assigned and served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of April the Battalion participated on combat operations in the Huong Hoa District of northwestern Quang Tri Province in the vicinity of the Khe Sanh Combat Base. Operation PEGASUS to seize the high ground and reopen Route 9 for vehicular traffic was successfully completed and on April 16 Operation SCOTLAND II was launched. With the Battalion positioned on Hill 689 several kilometers west of Khe Sanh Company A proceed south and soon became engaged with the NVA. First the lead elements were hit with sniper fire and as they attempted to move forward the enemy fire intensified with the men being hit with grenades and barrages of mortar fire. Taking casualties, elements of Company D and C were dispatched to join in the battle, and to assist the recovery of casualties while at the same time Hill 689 began to receive enemy mortar and rocket fire. By nightfall the Marines were able to withdraw to the Battalion perimeter with some of their casualties, there were many wounded and forty-two who were killed in the action with four men whose bodies would never be recovered.

LCpl Medeiros was one of the casualties; he was killed in action by a hostile explosive device and his remains were recovered on April 22.
