Irene grew up on East Atkins Street with her twin brother, Frank, and sister, Enid. Irene taught swimming at the YWCA where she met her late husband, Stanley J. Ferguson. They were married in 1950 and have three children, Corey, Curt and Cathie all born in Erie. Irene continued teaching at the Y until their family moved to Southern California in 1959. In Erie, Irene also worked for WICU-TV, hosting their first live television exercise program in the late 1950's.
Once settled in California, Irene continued her passion, teaching swimming. She taught at the Inglewood YMCA and for Crystal Scarboro Swim School in Beverly Hills before opening her own business, The Irene Ferguson Swim School, in Torrance and Gardena, specializing in teaching infants to swim. In 1988 Irene and Stan moved to Coto de Caza in South Orange County, to be closer to their children. Irene continued to teach swimming at private homes until retiring in 2003, after 62 years of being a swimming instructor. Irene was predeceased by Stanley in 2003.
She is survived by her sister Enid Bishop of Erie, Pa and her three children, Corey, Curt, and Cathie of Trabuco Canyon, CA; eight grandchildren, Paul, Stephen, Kathryn, Jessica, Brian, Kurt, Kevin, and Kelsey; three great-grandchildren, Israel, Chandler and Isabella.
