He was a plowman (laboureur) in France. On March 14, 1839, when he was living and working in Pfastatt, he applied to leave Haut-Rhin for Wilmot in Canada. He migrated with his family to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, near Tavistock in 1837. Sometime between 1840 and 1854 he and his wife walked from Canada to Wayland, Iowa. He had eleven children. He married Magdalena on September 6, 1840 in Wilmot, Canada.

Son of Christ Schlatter and Anne Marie Roth.

Children: Christopher, Joseph, Katrina, Fanny, Mary, John, Barbara, Benedict (Benjamin), Nickolas, Peter and Jacob.

Joseph's younger brother Sebastian (1819 - 1872) also applied for passage from Pfastatt, HR to Ohio, embarking on the ship Albany and arriving in New York Dec. 21, 1839.

The Slatter Family Book, compiled by Helen Slatter and Florence Slatter Shank, in 1980, has the death date of Joseph as March 10, 1897 and information from Lorraine Roth in Ontario, Canada.
