ROBERT MARION HENSON, SR

Robert Marion Henson of Okolona died Tuesday, October 21, of complications from open heart surgery. Survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Emily McGuire Henson, he leaves three sons, Robert Marion Henson, Jr. (Martha), David Wright Henson, Mark Edward Henson (Kelly), and eight grandchildren, Bob III, Mary, Emily, Stephen, Phillip, David Wright Jr, Tatum, and Faith Ann.

Bob attended Mississippi State University, graduating in 1952. He then entered the United States Air Force, serving as a Second Lieutenant during the Korean conflict.

A pioneer of the north Mississippi furniture industry, Bob began his career purchasing Prairie Lumber Company in Okolona, which soon became Henson Lumber. In 1968 he founded the Rose Hill Company which made tables, and in the late eighties Sycamore Hill, which supplied wood products to furniture factories all over northern Mississippi. His innovations in engineering and processing are well known throughout the furniture industry even today.

A lifetime Presbyterian, Bob was a deacon in the Okolona Presbyterian Church.

As well as an entrepreneur, Bob was a sustainer of the business community, serving on the board of the Bank of Okolona, as a city councilman, and donating his considerable energy to build the horse ring at Wilson Park. His commitment to the continuing education and advancement of local youth was evident in his established practice of hiring multiple teenagers to work during the summer holidays and whenever one needed help. Their numbers are legion.

The family will receive visitors at two o'clock Friday afternoon at Holland Funeral Home on Main Street in Okolona. A rite of committal will follow at three p.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Okolona Presbyterian Church, PO Box 142, 38860, or a charity of your choice.
