William was born with the middle name Hardon; but by the time he registered for the military draft in 1917, he was using Jefferson for his middle name.

At age 18, he married on December 16, 1908, in Marshall County, Iowa, to Lila E. Edginton; but the marriage must not have lasted, as in the 1910 Federal census, he's single, living with his parents in Marshalltown, Iowa, along with his married sister Cora Cowger and her husband George, and his baby sister Bessie Melton. Perhaps the marriage was annulled, since he was underage to marry in Iowa without his parents' consent.

At age 22, he married October 27, 1913, in Marshall County, Iowa, to Bessie Mearle "Merle" McKee (1896-1984). 3 children:
1. Arlyss Iola Melton 1916-1962
2. Betty Rose Melton 1921-
3. William Jefferson Melton Jr. 1926-2001

The 1930 Federal census shows William living in Racine, Wisconsin, with a wife Audrine A Melton and his three children: Arlyss, Betty, and William Jr.
