Lewis Milton Firey, Jr. was the son of Lewis (Lew) Milton Firey and his first wife, Katharine (Kay) Craig Montgomery Firey. Lew and Kay had another son, Gerald Montgomery Firey who was born 21 Jan 1931 and was buried 22 Jan 1931 in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Manhattan, New York.

Lew's daughter-in-law reports that Kay took Lewis Jr. ("Lewie") and ran away to Reno, Nevada, where she filed for divorce from Lew (the divorce was finalized in 1932).

Lew married Lucille (Lucy) Judge in 1935. Shortly after they were married, a woman named Lottie showed up at their door with 6 year old Lewie. She had been Lewie's nanny in Nevada, where Kay was an alcoholic and, according to Lottie, "that woman ain't fit to raise this child." Lottie had saved her money, kidnapped Lewie, and took a train across the country to show up at their door. Lottie stayed on as a housekeeper and Lewie's nanny, eventually also becoming a nanny to Lew and Lucy's children, Jane and Hank.

Lewie lived with the family until he went to boarding school at The Hill School (the same school his father had attended as a young man). He would spend holidays with Lew and Lucy. At some point, amends were made with Kay when she remarried and got sober. She and her husband (Nielsen) owned a ranch in Reno, Nevada, where Lewie visited in the summer - helping with the ranch, and riding bulls and broncos at rodeos around the West.

After graduating from The Hill School, Lewie went to U of VA and U of MD, studying sciences in order to run the ranch. Upon graduation, he was drafted into the Army for the Korean War. Lew and Lucy had wanted him to go to Canada to avoid the war, but Lewie didn't think that was honorable and also wanted to be able to live in the U.S. again so he could be a rancher.

In 1953, Lewis Milton Firey, Jr. was killed in the Korean War five days before the Korean Armistice Agreement was signed.

Lewis Sr. never recovered from the loss of his first born child.
