J.A. Coursey was well known in Llano Co, therefore his obituary was extensive. It ran the length of a whole newspaper column plus a portion of another column. Full obit can be found in the August 11, 1932 edition of the Llano News.
James was one of Llano County's most highly regarded citizens. He came to Llano Co in 1875, and for fifty-seven years had lived on the home place where he died.
He married wife Rebecca in 1886. They had 10 children.
The word of J.A. Coursey was never questioned. He was honest, industrious, highly active in civic and local affairs. He was always striving for the betterment of the community. He was elected County Commissioner in November 1888 for the Click community precinct. He held that position for 10 years until he retired in 1898.
In 1892 he joined the Cumberlin Presbyterian Church, to which he was a loyal member until his death. James was highly religious; devout in his Christian obligations, strong in the cause of right.
His obituary states: "Perhaps no one person was better or more favorably known in our county than this gentleman, and while his death had been expected for some time, yet its announcement brought a hush of sadness to all and especially to those who had known him best during his active days of life."
There was a large concourse of family and friends at his funeral, with a large number of floral arrangements offered.
His list of pallbearers and honorary pallbearers was extensive; some of Llano County's most well known men.
