Pioneer Sherman Woman Dies: Mother McKinney Man

Death came to Mrs. M. J. Penn, mother of D. K. Penn of this city and a former resident of Sherman at her home at Calera, Okla., at 4 o'clock Wednesday. Mrs. Penn had been in ill health for a long time and her death was not altogether not unexpected. She was 82 years and nine months of age.

The remains were brought overland to Sherman by Haynes & Scott, and funeral services will take place from the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. K. Penn, Lamar and Montgomery streets, at 5 o'clock this afternoon. Rev. J. F. Pierce of Travis Street Methodist church will conduct the religious services, and burial will be in West Hill cemetery. The pall bearers will be L. J. Reynolds, C. B. Dorchester, George Hardwicke, R. A. Gibbs, W. H. Lankford, H. L. Hall and R. G. Piner.

The deceased was a native of Trimble county, Kentucky. As Miss Mattie Logan she was married to Washington K. Penn of Bourbon county, Kentucky, and moved with him to Sherman in 1873. Mr. Penn was among the influential and wealthy citizens of Bourbon county. When he moved to this city, he purchased a large place just north of the city, which was disposed of after his death in 1890.

Following the death of her husband Mrs. Penn moved to Calera about eighteen years ago, where she has since made her home. She was known as a woman of wide charities. Since earliest girlhood she has been a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, South.

All of her children, as well as two foster children, survive her. They are D. K. Penn of Sherman, D. S. Penn of Calera and W. K. Penn of McKinney; Mrs. Alphia Stringfield of El Paso and Mrs. W. L. Scearce of Calera. The foster children Mrs. Joe Fawcett of Preston Bend and J. L. Brewer of Illinois. All of the children with the exception of Mrs. Stringfield were at the bedside when end came. In her hospitable home in Kentucky Mrs. Penn has entertained as many as thirty-five visiting delegates attending the annual conference of the Methodist church.

One brother, Ben C. Logan, of Joplin, Mo., also survives her.----Sherman Democrat.
