HOMER WELLMAN 1786 - 1858 or 59 purchased land in the Town of Busti on the Wellman road in 1810. Wellman Road was named for his family. In 1811 he traveled from Whitestown, Oneida County, N.Y. in a covered sleigh bringing with him his family, his goods and a cow, being eighteen days on the road, and arrived in the latter part of February at the home of Myron Bly on Chautauqua Lake. He stayed there one week until a shanty could be built on Wellman Road, where he settled. His nearest neighbor and only
other settler on Wellman Road was Jonas Lamphere. He married Charlotte Lord 1786 -1880. They had children, eight of whom lived to be men and women. These eight
children were: Harlow Homer, Orrin, Ira, Dewitt Clinton, Ardillo, Cecelia, Lucy and Emeline. In 1812 Homer Wellman was called out a short time to serve with the militia to
defend Buffalo. He died on the farm he had settled. He and his wife Charlotte are buried in the Wellman Road Cemetery.
