John Wilford Steed, born 9 November, 1846, in Keokuk, Iowa, son of James and Caroline Holland Steed, came across the plains in 1849. As a boy he helped cut and haul logs and wood from the canyons, and herded cattle all over the range, milked cows and worked very hard as a boy. He was married to Ann Jenkins, 28 December, 1867, in the old endowment house. He was a freighter in the early days and loved to roam the hills and lived close to nature. He was a good husband and father and had a special gift of healing the sick. As he grew older he began to lose his' eye sight, and gradually became blind. He died when 93 years of age.
