Serving in the 5th Texas Infantry, CSA, Lt. Hurt was captured at the Devil's Den near the base of Little Round Top, July 2, 1863 and was held prisoner of war first at Johnson Island, Ohio, near Sandusky. He was released March 14, 1865, and returned to Cox's Wharf, James River, Virginia.
