Herbert Persky, Jr., 85 of Greer South Carolina, passed away October 11, 2014. Herbert was born to Tula and Herbert H. Persky on August 28, 1929 in Rogers, Texas.
Herbert attended Temple High School and after graduation entered the U.S. Navy and served as a radioman during the Korean War. After graduating from Temple Junior College he entered the Naval Flight Program and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps and retired from active duty as a Major in 1977. They moved to Austin where he and his wife Muriel owned a hardware store, and were co-owners of a data processing company and later moved to South Carolina to be near a son. Herbert was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and did extensive volunteerism.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Muriel whom he met in Quantico, Virginia; three children, daughter, Marie Russell Cowie and husband Larry of Charlotte, NC, son, Commander George F. McMahon and wife Kristina of Oceanside, CA, and son, Michael P. McMahon and wife Meryl of Greer, SC; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Herbert was preceded in death by a son, Lance Corporal Timothy R. McMahon, USMC; his parents Herbert and Tula, three sisters; Priscilla Persky of Ramsey, NJ, Alice Harlan of Temple, and Charlotte Woodward of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
