Oliver K. Belote Sr.
Canton - Oliver King "Sparky" Belote Sr., 96, of Canton, died May 13, 2004, at the Madison County Medical Center in Canton. Funeral services were held May 15 at Grace Episcopal Church with burial in the Canton Cemetery. Born in Memphis, Tenn., "Sparky" had lived in Canton since 1979. In 1975, he retired as manager of the Photo Engraving Department of the Memphis Publishing Co., where he had worked for 48 years. An avid artist, he studied at the Memphis Academy of Arts. He loved working with watercolor and oils. He also studied woodcarving in the early 20's and enjoyed it all of his life. He carved many pieces for members of his family. After moving to Mississippi, he used his carving ability to make many sets of Stations of the Cross. He made the processional cross and large cross on the wall behind the altar in the chapel at Duncan Gray Center in Canton. He also carved the processional cross for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Canton. He worked with Sister Grace Mary repairing homes for the poor in the early days of Mad-CAAP (Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty). His wife, Jimmie Otis Belote, also an artist, preceded him in death. Ironically, she also died on Flea Market Day, October 1994. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Anne Frazier and her husband Bob of Jonesboro, Ark. Survivors include: his sons, Oliver King Belote Jr. and wife Ruby of Canton, and Edward Earl Belote and wife Shirley of Kansas City, Mo.; his brother, Marvin Belote of Memphis; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren
