Wayman A. Hoots, 92, of New Castle passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in the home of his daughter, where he had been staying. He was born January 22, 1921, a son of the late Herbert G. and Abbie (Sells) Hoots.

A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, Wayman was wounded in action, and was later captured by the Germans and put before a firing squad, where at the last minute the guns were halted. He was then placed in a Nazi Prison Camp where he spent 27 months and nearly died of starvation. Upon liberation from the Nazi’s, he was finally separated at Camp Atterbury, then he hitch hiked to Kentucky, where he met his wife and 2 ½ year old daughter, Nell. The next year, he and his young family moved to New Castle, where he began working at Ingersoll Steel Co., where he retired in 1976 after over 30 years of service. Wayman was the recipient of a bronze star, purple heart, and several other medals. A highlight in his life was when, at age 90, State Rep. Tom Saunders honored Wayman at the statehouse for his valiancy, where he received several standing ovations as he told his story. He was also the New Castle Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshall in 2012.

Wayman had been an active member of the First Apostolic Church in New Castle since 1946. He had served as Sunday School Superintendant, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, song leader, board member and church secretary.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of over 71 years, Mary I. (Aaron) Hoots of New Castle, whom he married on January 4, 1942; two daughters, Iva Nell Cox and Judy J. Ping, both of New Castle; five grandchildren, Rick Cox of Muncie, Marlena (Gary) Wray of New Castle, Eric Ping of New Castle, Shannon (Tony) Beck of Martinsville, and Valerie Renee (Daniel) Shafer of Martinsville; ten great grandchildren, Andrea (Eric) Yelverton of Texarkana, AR, Ashley (Cody) Curran of Ft. Bragg, NC, Zach and Logan Cox, both of Muncie, Brad McClurg of New Castle, Krista (Chris) Weidert of New Castle; Ross and Aaron Beck, both of Martinsville, and Stephen and Charity Shafer, both of Martinsville; a step-great granddaughter, Lauren Wray of Middletown; five great-great grandchildren, Lincoln, Levi and Luke Yelverton, Garrett McClurg, and Cooper Weidert, and twin baby girls due in September.

Also, two sisters, Colleen Wallace of Spiceland and Wanda Taylor of Louisville, KY; a brother, James Rule Hoots of Indianapolis; a sister in law, Carla Hoots of New Castle; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Jean Hoots; a son-in-law, P. Richard Cox; a step-great grandson, Chase Wray; four sisters, Vera Wallace, Vida Jennings, Opal Martin, and Doris Jean Hoots; three brothers, Alvis, Clifford, and Harold Hoots.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2013 at First Apostolic Church in New Castle with Pastor John D. Beck Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memory Gardens.
