Born in Scott County, KY, he was the son of the late George and Oma "Jenny" Tucker Wise.
A graduate of Transylvania University, Mr. Wise began his career with KHSAA as assistant commissioner in 1969 and later served as executive assistant commissioner in 1979 and commissioner, beginning in 1991.
He was a former official with the Southeastern Conference, Ohio Valley Conference and the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He was a member of the National Federation of Football Rules Editorial Committee, National Federation of Basketball Rules Committee, National Competition Committee, was a University of Kentucky Fellow and a former trustee at Campbellsville University. He was also a member of the Transylvania Barr Society, Transylvania Athletic Hall of Fame, Campbellsville University Athletic Hall of Fame and the Dawahares, KHSAA Hall of Fame. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the US Army.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by his three children, a sister, four grandchildren, a sister-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Wise and brother, George H. "Jack" Wise Jr.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Milward-Southland, 391 Southland Dr., Lexington. Burial will follow at the Lexington Cemetery. Visitation: 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
