Dr. James E. Barrick II, P.E., age 69, a Sewickley Hills, Pa., resident for the past 34 years, formerly of Alliance, Ohio, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011, at Sewickley Valley Hospital after a brief illness. He was born April 18, 1942, in Canton, Ohio, son of the late James E. and Anjanette (Turner) Barrick.

He is the beloved husband of 45 years and childhood sweetheart to Barbara (Grant) Barrick; loving father of Amy Coco (Jeff) of Indiana Township, Pa., Melissa McDaniel (Oladele) of Chicago, Ill., and James Barrick III (Amanda) of Nashua, N.H.; proud grandfather of Jefrey Barrick, Cameron and Jordan Coco, Opale and Westley Barrick; loving brother of John Barrick (Daniel Wolfson) of Stow, Ohio, and the late Scott Barrick; brother-in-law of Teresa Barrick-Sharrad of Louisville, Ohio; and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Highly educated, Dr. Barrick graduated from Alliance High School in 1960 and obtained his Bachelor of Science in physics, mathematics and history in 1964 from Mount Union College; Bachelor of Science in civil engineering in 1967 from Youngstown State University; Master of Science in civil engineering in 1969 from Carnegie Mellon University; his Ph.D. in civil engineering in 1972 from Carnegie Mellon University.

For 45 years, he was a consulting civil engineer, most recently for Neville Township (Pa.) and Consol Energy and other numerous firms. His affiliations included American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Water Works Association (AWWA), Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), U. S. Society for Dams (USSD), Society of Mining, Metallurgy Exploration (SME), Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and numerous other professional organizations. He was the former director of American Society of Civil Engineers, Pittsburgh Section.

When not working, he was often found playing pool, or on the golf course -- mostly in the woods. Well respected for his intelligence, we will always hold him in our memories, especially his sense of humor.

Memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Copeland's Sewickley, 702 Beaver St., Sewickly, PA 15143.

Private burial services will be held in Alliance, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society. (10-15-11)
