Daniel Ray Gilbreath, 83, passed away peacefully at his home at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 and is in the company of our Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ.

Services with military honors will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday, October 11th, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Sayles Blvd. with Rev. Steve Brooks and Rev. Amy Wilson Feltz officiating under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ft. Phantom Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, October 10th from 6-8PM AT Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home at 542 Hickory Street.

Daniel (Dan) was born August 12, 1931 in Throckmorton County, Texas to Rollin and Rita (Bryson) Gilbreath.

Dan moved to Dublin, Texas as a small child where he attended school and graduated in 1950.

Dan played all sports in high school, receiving recognition as Team Captain in football, three year letterman and 2nd team all-district.

Dan joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War on the USS KIDD as Quarter Master 3.

After his Honorable Discharge he enrolled at McMurry University where he met Maudene Keesee. They married November 1955, at the United Methodist Church of Nugent, Texas and would have celebrated 59 years of marriage this November.

After graduating from McMurry Dan and Maudene moved to San Antonio, Texas where he coached sports four years with Burbank High School in the San Antonio district. In 1962 he moved to North East School District where he coached and taught. He later became Jr. High Administrator after receiving his Administration Master's Degree from Trinity University in San Antonio in 1968. His last 18 years with the school district were spent as the Asst. Director of Personnel where Dan recruited teachers for the district in all areas of education by visiting colleges all over Texas. Dan also directed training classes and chaired teacher center seminars.

He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators and other professional organizations.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters and brother: Dixie, JoAnn, Bernice, Elaine and Emitt. Also awaiting him in Heaven are his loving granddaughters Amanda Gilbreath, Kaytlyn Gilbreath, and Megan Gilbreath.

Survivors include his wife Maudene; sons, David and wife Judy of Clyde, Texas, John and his wife Christy of Montgomery; daughter, Deborah and her husband David Sprick of Frederick, Maryland; brother, Bill of Granbury; grandchildren: Andrew and Aaron Gilbreath, Melissa and Matthew Sprick, Brandon, Justin, and Patrick Gilbreath; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dan was very proud of his years in the Navy, loving every minute. He proudly wore his UDD KIDD-DD661 cap. He wrote stories of his Navy life and said "he was a sailor and always will be".

Dan was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and Wesley Open Door Sunday School Class.

Dan cherished his children and grandchildren.
