Velma Mae (McDaniel) (Clayton) McClendon, 87, died peacefully at home, September 7, 2014, in Harper, Texas. She was known by her friends as “Sandy.” She was preceded in death by her six children, Frances Bryant, Pamela Lewis, Darlene Jenkins, Charlene Blair, Grady Clayton, Jr., Arthur Clayton, and one step-son Leonard McClendon.
Velma was a star athlete at her school in Pine Prairie, Louisiana, then graduating, and trained on the B52s during wartime. She moved to Texas and worked many years as supervisor of central supplies and as an ER nurse at Tidelands Hospital in Channelview, Texas. She retired to join her daughters, Frances and Pam, in their boutique. Along the way, she obtained her CDL license to go on the road team-driving with her late husband. She was a grand-lady of the community, who tirelessly devoted herself to the point of truth and outspoken clarity. Her devotion and commitment to family was remarkable – a great cook to no end!

The celebration of her life was September 10, 2014, and she is resting in the great state of Louisiana, where she was born. She is very much loved and will be greatly missed. Salute to the greatest peacemaker of all times. We love you, Mama!
